Creating A Defensible Safety Foundation: American Rheinmetall + Edge Case Partnership Story
In 2023, American Rheinmetall brought in Edge Case to strengthen the safety foundation of a major weapon system program. At the time, American Rheinmetall needed a partner with proven expertise in MIL-STD-882E to help meet rigorous government requirements. Edge Case was selected based on its reputation and prior work supporting U.S. Army weapon system programs.
Edge Case became an extension of the program team. Our work spans a broad range of safety engineering activities, combining hands-on execution with consulting and guidance to help American Rheinmetall establish and mature its overall safety approach. This includes building and managing the program’s hazard tracking system, providing support for functional and software safety efforts, and ensuring safety activities remain aligned with program needs and government expectations requirements. Through this embedded model, Edge Case provides American Rheinmetall with continuous access to experienced safety engineers who help translate MIL-STD-882E safety provisions into demonstrable embedded results across the program.
Over the past two years, American Rheinmetall has seen measurable progress from this collaboration. The program now operates within a structured, defensible safety framework aligned with MIL-STD-882E, with safety artifacts consistently developed to support upcoming government milestones. Edge Case has helped ensure the program is well positioned for major reviews, including successful Preliminary and Critical Design Reviews and ongoing preparation for Test Readiness Reviews, reducing the risk of late-stage issues and strengthening confidence with government stakeholders. Safety insights generated through this work continue to inform key design decisions, mitigating risk across both hardware and software as the system matures.
As the partnership has evolved, Edge Case’s role has expanded to multiple engagements, particularly in software safety. Edge Case has provided consulting, training, and guidance to help teams interpret and apply commercial safety standards, including IEC 61508 to achieve Safety Integrity Level 3 (SIL 3), within a defense context. This support has included developing templates, processes, and reference materials that enable American Rheinmetall’s growing safety team to execute functional and software safety activities more effectively and at greater scale.
Edge Case also supports Environmental Safety & Occupational Health (ESOH) working group meetings. We help develop and review safety artifacts, prepare presentation materials, and support discussions about American Rheinmetall’s safety progress. These working groups are strictly focused on safety and development maturity.
By combining deep technical expertise with close collaboration, Edge Case has provided American Rheinmetall with experienced safety engineering support, strengthened milestone readiness, and improved the program’s ability to demonstrate safety progress with confidence. What began as a need for additional safety resources has grown into a trusted partnership that continues to raise the bar for safety engineering across the multiple programs.
